Enugu Commissioner Takes Bold Step Against Illegal Adoption and Child Trafficking

Tackling the alarming rise of illegal adoption and child trafficking, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development in Enugu State, has taken a resolute stand. A significant meeting brought together key stakeholders, including hospitals and service providers, to address the pressing issue of black-market adoption.

The meeting focused on reinforcing the importance of adhering to proper adoption procedures and raising awareness about the legal consequences of engaging in illicit adoption practices. In her address to the assembly, Commissioner Enih reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to its mission of providing care and support to the community, particularly to vulnerable children.

Highlighting legislative regulations governing the adoption process, Commissioner Enih stressed the significance of following established protocols. She firmly stated that the Enugu State Government is determined to eradicate illegal adoption, with serious legal repercussions awaiting those involved.

"The Enugu State Child Rights Law 2016, in accordance with the Nigerian Child Rights Law 2003, outlines the criteria and procedures for legitimate adoption, safeguarding the rights and welfare of both children and women," Commissioner Enih emphasized.

Acknowledging the challenges citizens face, including economic hardship, lack of awareness about legal adoption processes, and corruption, Commissioner Enih unveiled plans for public enlightenment programs to educate the public on legal adoption procedures in Nigeria.

Addressing the broader issues, she proposed solutions such as creating job opportunities for young women and streamlining adoption laws to regulate orphanage homes, which could effectively tackle the problem at its roots.

Representing Partnering Hospitals, Dr. Aikay Ubaka, Chief Medical Director of Cimac Clinics Uwani Enugu, pledged unwavering support to the ministry's cause. He commended Commissioner Enih's dedication and expressed confidence in her leadership. Dr. Ubaka also praised the visionary leadership of Enugu State Governor, His Excellency, Barr. Peter Mbah, for appointing Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Enih.

Esteemed directors from partnering hospitals, including Dr. Eneh C.C of St. Bridget Hospital Emene and Dr. Ikechukwu Onoh of Tex Hospital 9th Mile Corner Ngwo, were present, showcasing their unified commitment to addressing illegal adoption.

The Enugu State Government's unwavering action, under the leadership of the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, sends a powerful message against black-market adoption. These efforts aim to safeguard the rights and well-being of children while ensuring a legitimate adoption process. As the community bands together to combat this unethical practice, Commissioner Enih's initiative shines as a beacon of hope for a safer, more lawful future for adoption in Enugu State.
