Enugu State Gov't Takes Bold Step Towards Economic Growth with Cocoa Plantation Initiative

The Enugu State Government has acquired a significant expanse of land for the establishment of a Cocoa plantation. This initiative aligns with the visionary goal of Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to elevate the state's economy from 4.4 billion to 30 billion dollars in the coming years.

Hon. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, announced this development during his visit to the Idodo communities at Igwe Hyacinth Edeani's palace. He expressed gratitude to the three autonomous communities—Ohani Amechi Idodo, Eziama Amechi Idodo, and Amechi Idodo—for their generous donation of 20 hectares of land in Abari for the Cocoa plantation.

The commissioner highlighted that the establishment of Cocoa production in the area would play a pivotal role in job creation for the youth and women, addressing unemployment in the communities and the state. He emphasized the potential for increased Cocoa as an international export and cash crop for Nigeria.

In an ambitious move, Hon. Ubru detailed the government's plan to acquire and develop 300,000 hectares of land in Nkanu East and other LGAs through collaboration with local governments for Cocoa production. He assured comprehensive training, capacity building for farmers, and efforts to connect them with off-takers.

Enumerating the requirements from the communities, Hon. Ubru outlined the need for a perimeter survey, engagement of a professional surveyor, and consent letters from the community leaders. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, Mr. Victor Ngwu, expressed gratitude for the community's willingness and stressed the importance of a formal letter of consent.

Traditional rulers and community leaders welcomed the government's initiative, promising their commitment to the agreement. The President General, representative of the youth, woman leader, and other community representatives affirmed their awareness of the land donation and expressed support for the Cocoa production project.

The Hon. Commissioner was accompanied by key officials, including the Legal Officer, Mrs. Ngozi Ibekwe, the Personnel Assistant, Mr. Isaac Azikiwe, and the Deputy Director in the Agriculture Department, Mr. Theophilus Ivo. The community members, including traditional rulers, cooperative society leaders, and other stakeholders, attended the event, demonstrating the collective enthusiasm for the impactful project.
