The initiative, named "Subsidised Fashion Skills Training," aims to equip young individuals with essential skills, fostering their entry into the rapidly growing fashion industry in Nigeria.

The inaugural training program, spanning between six to twelve months, encompasses diverse facets of fashion, including tailoring, embroidery, stitching, fashion making, and various startup skills. Participants will benefit from this comprehensive training sponsored by the government at a highly subsidized rate of N10,000,reflecting the state government's commitment to making the program accessible to a broad spectrum of youths.

Hon. Pharm Chika Ugwuoke, the Commissioner for Labour and Employment in Enugu State, emphasized Governor Peter Mbah's administration's dedication to skills development for employability and wealth creation . He maintained that the ministry of Labour and Employment has been revamped by the governor as a ministry that is instrumental to the achievement of inclusive economic development and communal prosperity. The initiative is seen as a strategic move to alleviate poverty by engaging young people in meaningful activities that enhance their productivity, drawing inspiration from successful models in countries like Egypt,Italy,China, Japan and other rapidly growing economies.

Hon. Pharm Ugwuoke highlighted the great potentials in the fashion industry which is currently worth $1.31 billion in Nigeria, citing it as a lucrative avenue due to the perpetual demand for locally made clothing. He stressed the need to empower Enugu youths to tap into this sector and capitalize on the vast opportunities presented by the state government's subsidization of training fees. By reducing the financial barrier, the government aims to encourage widespread participation, ultimately fostering economic growth and prosperity for the citizens of Enugu State.

This groundbreaking initiative aligns with the state's commitment to creating an environment conducive to skill development, economic empowerment, and sustainable growth. As the first batch of trainees embarks on this transformative journey, Enugu State anticipates a surge in skilled fashion professionals contributing to the vibrant and evolving landscape of the Nigerian fashion industry.
