UN, West African Youth Congress Address Kaduna Bombing, Express Condolences and Urge Caution

The United Nations (UN) and the West African Youth Congress (WAYC) have issued statements extending heartfelt condolences to the community affected by the recent bombing incident in Kaduna State. The tragic event, a result of a misinterpretation leading to an airstrike, claimed numerous civilian lives.

Both global and regional bodies called for restraint, urging agitated youth groups to withhold protests and calls for the resignation of Minister of Defence H.E Mohammed Badaru. The inquiries into the incident are ongoing, and the efforts of the Minister in managing national insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria, were acknowledged.

In a press release, Ambassador Ahmed Marafa Mohammed, Secretary General of WAYC, expressed deep regret for the incident, empathizing with the affected community. The Youth Congress condemned violence against civilians and called for a swift, transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the bombing.

WAYC asserted that the demand for Minister Badaru's resignation should be approached with nuance, highlighting his past achievements in Jigawa State and emphasizing his competence and experience in handling national security matters.

The Youth Congress also recognized Minister of State Defence, H.E Bello Matawalle's commendable track record in Zamfara state, underscoring the broader context of inherited challenges in addressing Northern Nigeria's longstanding insecurity issue.

WAYC cautioned against solely attributing the incident to the Ministry of Defence, urging consideration of the complex dynamics involved. The Congress encouraged unity and collaboration instead of divisive calls for resignations, emphasizing the need for patience and support in addressing multifaceted issues contributing to insecurity.

The UN Human Rights Office, represented by Spokesperson Seif Magango, acknowledged the accidental nature of civilian deaths in the incident. Magango called for authorities to review rules of engagement and standard operating procedures to prevent similar incidents. Expressing alarm over the misinterpretation of activities leading to the strike, the UN urged measures to ensure that such incidents do not happen again.
