17 SLAIN SOLDIERS: Nigeria's Apex Peace Advocacy Group, NPDA, Calls for Justice, Government's Action

The Nigeria’s Peace and Development Advocates (NPDA), in a strongly worded condemnation have branded the recent killing of 17 soldiers in the Okuama community of Delta State as a flagrant act of treason. Addressing the media in a press conference convened in Enugu on Wednesday, April 4th, 2024, the NPDA asserted that the assault on the soldiers, purportedly carried out by youths and sponsored militants, was a deliberate attempt to undermine the authority of the Nigerian state and its Armed Forces.

According to the NPDA's statement, signed by its National Coordinator, Hon. Chukwunonye Okereke, and Secretary, Barr. Forster Ugwoke, the motive behind the heinous act was to instill fear in the highest echelons of power and render Nigeria ungovernable. The NPDA emphasized that such brazen attacks on the symbols of national authority cannot be tolerated and called upon President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action to restore order and assert the sovereignty of the Nigerian state.

Furthermore, the NPDA criticized certain public commentators and analysts, whom they accused of being paid hirelings, for allegedly condoning and even justifying the reprehensible violence. The group categorically denounced any form of support for the perpetrators, equating it to complicity in treason.

The NPDA outlined several demands in response to the incident. First and foremost, they called for a thorough investigation to uncover the identities of those behind the treasonous act, emphasizing that the militant youths likely did not act alone. Additionally, they urged swift and impartial prosecution of all individuals found culpable, regardless of their stature or position.

In a bold move, the NPDA advocated for the removal of immunity for any implicated individuals currently enjoying such protection, asserting that no one should be shielded from accountability for declaring war against the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Moreover, they proposed the declaration of a state of emergency in any region where there is implicit support, whether intentional or inadvertent, for armed insurgency against the Nigerian state.

Amidst their condemnation, the NPDA expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support to the families of the fallen soldiers. They commended the president for his commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers, citing his provision of housing, scholarships, and other benefits to their families as a testament to his statesmanship.

In conclusion, the NPDA lauded the resilience of the Nigerian Armed Forces in combating the scourge of oil theft in the Niger Delta region and standing firm against non-state actors posing a threat to national security. They called for unity and resolve in the face of such challenges, reaffirming their commitment to peace, development, and the preservation of Nigeria's sovereignty.
