ENUGU MOURNS THE PASSING OF A POLITICAL TITAN, SENATOR AYOGU EZE: Tribute by Rt. Hon. Dr. Chinedu Nwamba

 


Enugu State, and indeed Nigeria, mourn the passing of a political titan, a visionary leader, and a true patriot, Senator Ayogu Eze. His demise has left an indelible void in the political landscape, one that will not be easily filled.


Rt. Hon. Dr. Chinedu Nwamba, former Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, expresses his profound shock and sorrow over the loss of Senator Ayogu Eze. In his tribute, he describes Senator Ayogu Eze as a remarkable politician who has left an indelible mark on the political terrain of Enugu and Nigeria. He extends his heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, friends, and well-wishers of the late senator, praying for them to find the strength to bear this monumental loss.


Senator Ayogu Eze's life was a testament to service, dedication, and excellence. Born on November 23, 1958, Senator Eze was a distinguished Nigerian politician who served his people with unwavering commitment and integrity. He was elected Senator for the Enugu North Senatorial District of Enugu State, taking office on June 5, 2007.


Before his illustrious tenure as a senator, Ayogu Eze had already made significant contributions to the development of Enugu State and the nation at large. A thoroughbred media professional, entrepreneur, community leader, and nation-builder, Senator Ayogu Eze served in various capacities, including as a Commissioner. He was a man of many accomplishments, having also served on the Boards of the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).


Senator Ayogu Eze was not just a politician; he was a scholar and a lifelong learner. He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, and furthered his education at the International Institute for Journalism, IIJ Berlin, Germany. He graduated on top of the G55 student stream, comprising working journalists from about 14 African countries. He also earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration from the University of Lagos. His quest for knowledge led him to attend executive education programs at prestigious institutions such as the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, and the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge.


In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the nation, Senator Ayogu Eze was decorated with one of Nigeria’s most prestigious national honors, the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), in 2012.


Senator Eze was not only a political leader but also a respected traditional leader. He held several chieftaincy titles, including Ebube Dike of Ogruteland, Okwulora of Umuozzi, Eze Chinaza Ekpere of Umumba Ndi Agu, and Odezulu Igbo of Unadu. These titles were a testament to his leadership, charisma, and commitment to his people.


In his political career, Senator Ayogu Eze was a trailblazer. He played a pivotal role in the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, serving as the party's pioneer state secretary. He later served as Commissioner for Information and Culture under Governor Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani. His exceptional performance led to his appointment as Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Affairs. In 2007, he was elected to the Nigerian Senate, where he distinguished himself as a fearless and articulate lawmaker.


During his eight years in the Senate, Senator Ayogu Eze served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and Media, making him the official spokesman of the Senate. He was also a member of the Constitution Drafting and Amendment Committee, where he made significant contributions to Nigeria’s constitution. After his reelection in 2011, he was appointed chairman of the Committee on Works, further solidifying his reputation as a diligent and effective legislator.


Senator Ayogu Eze's impact extended beyond the political arena. He was deeply committed to the welfare of his constituents and worked tirelessly to improve their lives. His legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire generations to come.


In his quest to serve his people, Senator Ayogu Eze contested for the governorship of Enugu State in the 2015 and 2019 general elections. Although he faced numerous challenges, his determination and passion never wavered. He remained a formidable force in Enugu State politics until his untimely demise.


The passing of Senator Ayogu Eze has plunged Enugu State into mourning, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of the people he served so diligently. As we bid farewell to a true statesman, let us honor his memory by continuing the work he started and striving to build a better Nigeria for future generations.
