Enugu: Finally, Suspected Killers of Ogbete Market Chairman Arrested
Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested two suspects linked to the killing of Mr. Stephen Aniagu, Chairman of the Ogbete Main Market Traders’ Association (OMMATA). The tragic incident occurred on September 14, 2024, when Mr. Aniagu was shot at Moses Ogbodo Junction near Topland Market in Amaechi, Enugu South Local Government Area.
Parading the suspects at the command headquarters on Friday, the Spokesperson of the Enugu State Police Command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that the arrests were the result of diligent intelligence work and coordinated efforts between detectives from the Anti-Robbery Section (D9) of the State CID and operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad.
The suspects were identified as Chukwudi Aboshi, a 28-year-old native of Anike in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and Ani Innocent Ebuka, also known as “Excellent,” a driver and native of Isigwe-Ugbawka in Nkanu East Local Government Area. Both were apprehended in Akwuke, Awkunanaw, Enugu South LGA, on November 8 and 9, 2024, respectively.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the murder of Mr. Aniagu. They provided detailed accounts of how they ambushed and attacked him, snatched his vehicle, and shot another male driver at the same location, stealing his Toyota Corolla. While the second victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment, the suspects admitted to committing other violent crimes, including operating a criminal camp in a forest at Mmaku in Awgu Local Government Area.
The suspects also identified other members of their gang, who are currently at large. These accomplices include Obinna Nnamani of Ndiagu Ogbo-Ezinne, Akpugo in Nkanu West LGA; Miracle, nicknamed “C-C” or “White,” from Mmaku community in Awgu LGA; Okoro Chisom from Ihie community in Awgu LGA; and several others. The police are actively working to apprehend these individuals and dismantle the gang.
Recovered items include a Tecno Android phone stolen from one of their victims and objects suspected to be charms.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Kanayo, reaffirmed the command's commitment to apprehending all individuals connected to this crime and ensuring justice for the victims. He expressed appreciation to Governor Peter Mba for his support to the police and other security agencies in the state. The Commissioner also lauded the residents of Enugu for their vigilance and cooperation, urging them to remain law-abiding and continue to support security efforts in maintaining peace and order.
This development underscores the police's determination to combat violent crimes and safeguard the lives and property of citizens in Enugu State.
