BREAKING! Former Minister, Wife Sentenced To 14 Years and 7 Years Respectively for Corruption

Former Minister and his Wife have been Sentenced To 14 Years and 7 Years Respectively for Corruption

A Pakistani court convicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, on corruption charges on January 17, 2025. Khan received a sentence of 14 years, while his wife was sentenced to 7 years. The charges stem from allegations that the couple accepted a gift of land from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in exchange for laundered money during Khan’s tenure as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.

Khan, who has been imprisoned since 2023, maintains that the charges are politically motivated. The couple allegedly allowed Malik Riaz to use laundered funds, totaling 190 million British pounds ($240 million), which had been returned to Pakistan by British authorities in 2022, to settle fines in a separate case. Khan has consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing the charges as part of a conspiracy by political rivals aimed at blocking his return to power.

Following the conviction, Khan vowed not to seek relief or negotiate with authorities. His defense lawyer, Faisal Chaudhry, stated that the court’s decision is not final and can be appealed in superior courts. In response to the verdict, lawmakers from Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), staged protests, calling the case against the former prime minister a "bogus" one.

Imran Khan's political career had already faced significant challenges before this verdict. He was ousted from office in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote in parliament. In addition to this corruption case, Khan has faced other convictions on charges of corruption, revealing official secrets, and violating marriage laws, with sentences totaling 10, 14, and 7 years in some cases. Pakistani law allows these sentences to be served concurrently, meaning Khan will only need to serve the length of his longest sentence.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar accused Khan of failing to inform his Cabinet about the funds returned from Britain, further alleging that Khan had used these funds to build a lavish new house in Lahore, with no proof of the source of the money used for its construction.
