JUST IN: First Lady Remi Tinubu Intervenes To Halt EFCC Arrest Of Impeached Lagos Speaker Obasa

Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has reportedly intervened to protect impeached Lagos Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, from arrest and prosecution in connection with an ongoing multibillion-naira fraud investigation, according to sources within the presidency.

The Gazette reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been poised to take action against Obasa upon his return to Nigeria. However, sources revealed that Mrs. Tinubu instructed that the speaker should not be arrested or prosecuted at this time, citing the need to preserve unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

An anonymous presidency official disclosed, “She said he’s important to them in Agege and surrounding areas, and they don’t want to risk division in their ranks right now. She urged the EFCC to continue their investigation but delay any action against him for now because of his significance to the party.”

Obasa, who was impeached on January 13 over allegations of budgetary fraud and corruption, is believed to hold substantial political power in critical Lagos constituencies like Agege and Alimosho—areas that were crucial in the 2023 elections.

Tinubu reportedly argued that Obasa’s influence in these regions is vital to President Tinubu’s re-election efforts in 2027, and his arrest at this juncture could destabilize the APC’s position in the state.

The EFCC has been investigating Obasa’s financial activities since 2020, following reports by The Gazette detailing his alleged illicit accumulation of wealth and mishandling of public funds. Though no charges were filed at the time, new corruption allegations linked to budget mismanagement led to his recent impeachment.

EFCC insiders had believed Obasa was ready for prosecution, but Tinubu’s intervention stopped the move. Sources within the agency confirmed they had been awaiting approval from the presidency to proceed with his arrest, but the signal never came, indicating the First Lady’s significant influence in the matter.
