Alleged Fraud: Court Orders Remand of Ex-NHIS Boss in Kuje Prison

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), at the Kuje Correctional Centre following his arraignment on Monday.

Yusuf faces charges of abusing his office and awarding contracts without following due procurement procedures between 2016 and 2017. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed five amended charges of alleged fraud against him. However, Yusuf pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Yusuf’s lawyer, O.I. Habeeb, requested that he be kept in EFCC custody pending the hearing of his bail application, but Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu declined the request. The judge stated that after arraignment, custody must be transferred from the EFCC to the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Justice Nwecheonwu ordered Yusuf to remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until his bail hearing on February 12, 2025.

The detention of Yusuf has sparked political controversy, with some critics, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, condemning the move. Atiku suggested that Yusuf's detention might be politically motivated, criticizing the current administration for allegedly using state power to silence its critics.
