Residents of Amegu Nkalaha community in Ishielu Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, are fleeing their homes following a deadly attack by armed herdsmen on Sunday. The death toll from the assault has risen to 16, with many homes and properties destroyed, including 25 houses and seven yam barns that were burned.
The attack occurred early in the morning when many residents had gone to church or their farms. Survivors expressed their frustrations, claiming the Nigerian military and police had failed to intervene despite prior assurances of protection. After the attack, security personnel arrived to recover bodies but allegedly seized phones from residents documenting the destruction.
The victims include a retired police officer and a pastor, with some bodies showing signs of brutal killings, such as slit throats and gunshot wounds. While police confirmed the recovery of 10 bodies, they are still searching for others.
