Electric Distribution Company Sacks 900 Workers, Says Pension Will Come In ‘Due Course’ As Employees Declare Indefinite Strike

On January 31, 2025, Kaduna Electric announced the dismissal of 900 employees, informing them that their net benefits would be credited to their accounts, while pension payments would be made "in due course." This decision follows a performance review meeting attended by senior company officials, including Managing Director Dr. Umar Abubakar Hashidu and Board Chairman Alhaji Aminu Abubakar Suleiman.

The company stated that the sacking is part of an effort to adjust operations to current challenges. The dismissed employees have only received 10% of their expected benefits, with a total of N494,481.18 paid to their accounts. Their pension, amounting to over N1 million, will be paid to their respective retirement savings accounts later.

In response to the sackings, the affected workers have declared an indefinite strike. The company also urged the employees to return all company property promptly.

While this decision has raised concern, some sources suggest that political motivations might be behind the layoffs, especially given the involvement of prominent figures like Alhaji Aminu Abubakar Suleiman, who was a disqualified senatorial aspirant from the Peoples Democratic Party.

The strike and dismissal have attracted widespread attention, with more developments expected in the coming days.
