BREAKING: Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission RSIEC Announces Date to Conduct Local Government Elections




The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that local government elections will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025.

The announcement was made by the RSIEC Chairman, Rtd. Hon. Justice Adolphus Enebeli, following Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s directive for all 23 Local Government Chairmen to hand over to the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs). The move comes in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which nullified the previous local government elections.

The Supreme Court had ruled that the elections did not meet legal requirements, leading to their cancellation and the restriction of local government allocations by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Governor Fubara has since urged calm and assured the public of a transparent electoral process.

In a ruling delivered on Wednesday, Inyang Ekwo, the presiding judge, held that the applicant, Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOSCO), lacked the legal right to institute the suit on Ukpo’s behalf.
