Enugu Female Appointees Triumph Over LG Chairmen’s Wives in 'IWD Novelty Match' Organised by Office Of The First Lady & State Ministry Of Gender Affairs
It was a day of fun, laughter, as Enugu women came together to celebrate International Women’s Day in a rather unique and exciting way on the football pitch. The Office of the Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, in collaboration with the Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, organized a novelty football match at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
The match, which pitted Enugu State’s female political appointees against the wives of local government chairmen, was more than just a game; it was a celebration of unity, fitness, and the growing presence of women in leadership. From the first whistle, it was clear that both teams were there to have fun but also to put up a spirited fight.
The stadium buzzed with excitement as the match kicked off at about 5:10 PM, with dignitaries such as the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, and the Chairman of Rangers International Football Club, Amobi, in attendance. The first half saw an unexpected turn of events, as both teams managed to score a goal each interestingly, both goals came from handballs, sparking laughter and friendly debates among spectators.
The second half brought even more drama, with both teams stepping up their game and pushing for victory. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, leading to a penalty shootout that had everyone on the edge of their seats. In the final moments, the female appointees proved their resilience, scoring three penalty goals against the local government chairmen’s wives, who managed only one. The final score: 5-3 in favor of the appointees.
Dressed in ash and black jerseys, the female appointees celebrated their victory with cheers and warm embraces, while their opponents in red jerseys took the defeat in stride, congratulating their counterparts with smiles and handshakes. It was clear that, at the end of the day, the real winner was the bond shared among the women.
Speaking after the match, the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, highlighted the significance of the event, stating that it was not just about football but about creating moments of joy and connection. “This match, organized by the First Lady’s Office, is a reminder that while we work hard as women, we must also find time to unwind, exercise, and strengthen our friendships. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate International Women’s Day,” she said.
The wife of the ALGON Chairman, Mrs. Fina Edeh, echoed similar sentiments, expressing gratitude for the initiative and encouraging women to always support and uplift one another. “This was such a wonderful experience. We had fun, we laughed, we played, and most importantly, we showed that women can do anything when they come together,” she remarked.
Before kickoff, Rangers International Football Club Chairman, Amobi, addressed the women, reminding them that the match was not just about competition but about fitness, teamwork, and fun. He wished all women a happy International Women’s Day and encouraged them to keep making a difference in their various fields.
The match was part of a series of activities planned to celebrate International Women’s Day in Enugu State, further showcasing Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s commitment to women’s empowerment and inclusion.
The women left the pitch not just as teammates but as friends, proving once again that when women come together, they can achieve anything on and off the field.
