I Don't Know Why We Are Supporting Senator Akpabio – Anti-Natasha Protester Confesses

Amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a counter-protest in his support took an unexpected turn when one of the demonstrators admitted they had no clear reason for backing him.

On Wednesday, a group of protesters gathered at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, opposing the call for Akpabio’s removal following allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. While they chanted pro-Akpabio slogans and carried banners with inscriptions such as “We Stand With Akpabio” and “Natasha Must Apologize,” a moment of confusion arose when journalists sought to understand their motivations.

During an interview, a young man among the protesters stunned reporters by admitting, “I don’t know why we are supporting Senator Akpabio. We were just told to come out and show support.” His confession raised further questions about the authenticity and organization of the counter-protest.

Observers at the scene noted that many of the demonstrators appeared hesitant and struggled to articulate their reasons for backing the Senate President. When pressed for details, another protester simply stated, “We were told Natasha is lying, and we should defend Akpabio, but I don’t really know the full story.”

This revelation has fueled speculations that the counter-protest may have been staged or influenced by external forces. Political analysts argue that such orchestrated demonstrations are not uncommon in Nigerian politics, where paid or uninformed protesters are sometimes mobilized to shape public perception.

Meanwhile, the protest in support of Akpabio coincided with a larger demonstration calling for his resignation, led mostly by women and youth activists. The anti-Akpabio protesters accused the Senate President of misconduct and suppression of investigations into corruption allegations, while demanding accountability.

Security operatives, including police officers and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were stationed around the National Assembly to prevent any outbreak of violence. However, tensions escalated when security forces fired teargas at the anti-Akpabio protesters, forcing them to disperse.

As the controversy continues to unfold, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has maintained her stance, insisting that she has "concrete evidence" to support her claims against Akpabio. The Senate President, through his media consultant, Kenny Okulogbo, has dismissed the allegations as "tissues of lies." His wife, Ekaette Akpabio, has also come to his defense, threatening legal action against
