BREAKING: Enugu CNG Buses Arrive, As Government Set To Kick Off Eco-Friendly and Affordable Transport System

The long-anticipated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses have finally arrived, marking a significant milestone in Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to deliver an affordable, safe, and environmentally sustainable transportation system to the people.

The arrival of the buses comes weeks after the Enugu State Government, through its Ministry of Transport, announced a public recruitment drive for qualified drivers to operate long buses under the Enugu State CNG Bus Mass Transit Scheme. Interested applicants were directed to apply via a dedicated online portal, with interviews commencing immediately at the Ministry of Transport headquarters. The deadline for applications was set for Thursday, 6th March 2025.

Speaking after a recent State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, confirmed that the CNG buses are part of a broader vision by the state to not only modernize transportation but also cushion the rising cost of fuel by introducing a more affordable and energy-efficient alternative.

"The Executive Council resolved that it is very important for the state and her citizens to begin the process of transitioning from petrol to CNG which saves about half of the cost of fuel in our transportation, thereby reducing the cost of transportation for our people," Dr. Ozor explained.

In addition to the buses themselves, the government is building extensive infrastructure to support the new system, including the ongoing construction of a massive CNG mother station at Ugwu Onyeama, with plans for several daughter stations to follow. This development, being executed in partnership with Greenville Energy, will not only serve Enugu but the entire South East region.

With recruitment concluded and infrastructure advancing rapidly, Enugu residents can now look forward to a new era of efficient, eco-friendly, and tech-integrated public transport, bringing to life a project that was first hinted at through the earlier job opportunity shared publicly in March 2025.
