BREAKING: Ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan Allegedly Detains 15 Domestic Workers Since 2019 Over Missing Jewellery
In a shocking revelation, former Nigerian First Lady Patience Jonathan has reportedly held 15 of her domestic workers in detention at the Okaka Correctional Centre in Bayelsa State since 2019 over allegations of stolen jewellery.
According to SaharaReporters, these workers have remained in custody without a court conviction, as their trial has faced repeated delays, allegedly due to the influence of Mrs. Jonathan. Sources familiar with the case have raised concerns over this prolonged detention, calling for urgent intervention to uphold justice and the constitutional presumption of innocence.
A source who spoke on the matter stated, “Since 2019, former First Lady Patience Jonathan has locked up about 16 of her domestic staff in Okaka Prison for allegedly stealing her jewellery, without first allowing a competent court of law to try them and sentence them.”
Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, served as Nigeria’s First Lady from 2010 to 2015 and as Second Lady from 2007 to 2010.
The allegations, if confirmed, would raise serious human rights concerns and call into question the fairness of the judicial process in cases involving influential figures. Human rights organizations and legal experts may soon weigh in on the matter, pushing for a resolution to the prolonged incarceration of the accused workers.
