Amb. Mrs Amaka Nweke Bags UN-POLAC Peace Award

History was made today on June 30, 2025, as Amb. Mrs. Amaka Judith Nweke JP., a devoted advocate for women’s inclusion and peacebuilding, captured global recognition at the prestigious Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, where she was honoured with the Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti Distinguished Woman of Peace Award and Honour by the United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC). The event was held in commemoration of the International Day of Parliamentarism, a date that globally honours the role of parliaments in democracy, peace, and nation-building.

In addition to this prestigious honour, Ambassador Nweke was officially inducted as an Associate Member of UN-POLAC, aligning her grassroots peace advocacy with the global objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UNESCO Culture of Peace Programme.

With dignitaries, gender advocates, and peace leaders gathered under one roof, the atmosphere at the Oriental Hotel was electric, filled with a spirit of hope, empowerment, and the unwavering call for a more inclusive and peaceful world. For many who have followed Amb. Nweke’s relentless service, this award is not just a recognition but a resounding affirmation of her life-long commitment to building bridges across communities and empowering the next generation of leaders.

“This global recognition by UN-POLAC is a testament to her advocacy for women inclusion across boards,” she stated with heartfelt gratitude during her acceptance speech.

Amb. Nweke dedicated her award to the working Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah; "she commends the governor for giving her a seat at the table by appointing her into the Local Government Service Commission and for his belief in women, inclusion in politics, governance, peace building, and nation building.”

 “To her family and strong supporters, especially the person or persons who nominated her for this award, she is  grateful she said. ” she added, her voice laced with emotion.

This recognition on the International Day of Parliamentarism is deeply symbolic, coming at a time when Amb. Nweke’s voice has grown louder in the corridors of governance. She reminded the audience.

Found her calling in humanitarian service through the Global Society for Anti-Corruption. Her advocacy has been far-reaching, from organizing transparency programs for local government leaders to championing anti-corruption, anti-drug, and anti-human trafficking campaigns and gender equity through radio, TV, town hall meetings, and youth programs.

Amb. Nweke’s work in water and sanitation advocacy, collaboration with Ministries of Water Resources and Health, and leading independent assessments of water facilities has positively impacted lives across Enugu State. Her grassroots empowerment initiatives, including the Amaka Nweke Foundation, the Anambra Women General Assembly, and the Women Support Women Community Network, have created platforms to mentor, empower, and build women and girls for development and leadership.

As Commissioner IV at the Enugu State Local Government Service Commission, overseeing the affairs of LG staff across 17 LGAs, she remains a fierce advocate for women’s participation in governance, aligned with Governor Peter Mbah’s zero tolerance for poverty and unemployment.

Amb. Nweke’s latest global honour by UN-POLAC not only elevates her mission but also signals a profound shift towards recognizing women who champion grassroots peacebuilding and inclusion in governance. Her passion for research, love for God and humanity, and a firm belief in leading by example continue to drive her vision.

This award places her in the rare circle of women entrusted with shaping the narrative of peace, governance, and gender equity across Africa and beyond, inspiring many young women who see her as a symbol of what is possible.

“The journey to this moment has been incredible, and she couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead,” she affirmed, her eyes reflecting a vision much bigger than herself.

While Enugu State, Nigeria, and indeed the world celebrate this milestone, Amb. Amaka Judith Nweke JP. carries forward the banner of hope, peace, and transformation, not only for women but for humanity, 

proving once again that excellence, when rooted in empathy and service, can transform communities and inspire generations.
