BREAKING! 16-Year-Old Girl Sentenced to Life for Killing Lecturer at Age 14
A 16-year-old girl, Miss Joy Afekafe, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of Dr. Mrs. Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna, which occurred in 2023 when Joy was just 14 years old.
Delivering the judgment on Wednesday at Minna High Court No. 4, Justice Mohammed Adishetu Mohammed ruled that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that the deceased, Dr. Adefolalu, was killed by Joy with the assistance of her friends, who are currently at large. According to the judgment, the group used knives to stab the lecturer multiple times before hitting her with a wooden stool, intending to kill her.
Justice Mohammed stated, “On the whole and for all the reasons stated in this judgment, I hold that the prosecution was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Dr Mrs Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu is dead and that her death was caused by the convict with her friends.”
Although Section 221 of the Penal Code prescribes a death sentence for culpable homicide, the court clarified that when the convict is under 18 years of age at the time of the offence, the law provides for a life sentence instead. Consequently, Joy Afekafe will serve a life custodial sentence for culpable homicide and an additional ten years for armed robbery.
The tragic incident occurred after Joy, who had worked briefly as a housemaid for Dr. Adefolalu, was dismissed due to misconduct. Feeling aggrieved, she conspired with her classmates, Walex and Smart, to attack the lecturer at her residence.
According to the Niger State Police Command, officers recovered two bloodstained knives at the crime scene, and Dr. Adefolalu was confirmed dead at the IBB Hospital, Minna. Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, stated that Joy confessed during interrogation, admitting her involvement in the attack after conspiring with her classmates, who are still at large.
This case has drawn significant public attention, reflecting the growing concerns around juvenile crime and the justice system's handling of minors involved in severe criminal offences in Nigeria.
