UNIZIK Confirms Death of 100-Level Law Student Locked Out of Hostel, Launches Probe

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has confirmed the death of Isabella Ajana, a 100-level Law student, and has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing.

Isabella, who was living with Type 1 Diabetes, died on July 4, 2025, at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital after nearly a week of hospitalisation. Reports indicate that she and her roommates were locked out of their Emalda Hostel room on June 27 after mistakenly leaving their key inside. Unable to access her insulin and medication for three days, Isabella’s health deteriorated before they gained access on June 30.

Although she received medical attention and showed signs of recovery, Isabella tragically passed away on July 4. Her death sparked grief and anger among students, with allegations that hostel management demanded up to N40,000 before releasing the spare key—a claim hostel authorities have denied.

UNIZIK’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Njelita Louis, stated that the university is investigating the incident, reviewing the management and welfare standards at the privately owned Emalda Hostel. The university assured transparency in the probe and pledged to take measures to prevent similar tragedies.

The administration has called for calm within the university community as the investigation continues.
