Insecurity: Governor Orders Cracks Down on Vehicles with Faulty or Missing Plates

Addressing growing concerns over security issues, the Government Lagos State has taken a firm stance against vehicles with damaged or absent license plates. Drivers found in violation of this directive will face detainment, according to a recent announcement.

Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, conveyed this directive over the weekend. He stressed the importance of adhering to legal requirements as outlined in the State’s Transport Reform Law of 2018, Sections 15 and 16.

Toriola explained that several behaviors pertaining to license plates are considered unlawful, such as obscuring or covering the plate without authorization, using faded or damaged plates, misusing them, or not using them at all. These actions, he highlighted, are particularly worrisome given the current security challenges faced by the nation.

Referring to Section 16 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, Toriola asserted that operating a vehicle without proper registration or without an affixed identification mark is a punishable offense. He underlined the significance of proper vehicle identification for both security and legal purposes.

Toriola also cautioned against the misuse of private number plates on commercial vehicles, highlighting that such actions are in violation of the TSRL, 2018. He urged individuals encountering registration challenges to seek Temporary Vehicle Tags (TVT) from the State's Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) in accordance with Section 193 of the TSRL, 2018.

Stressing the gravity of non-compliance, Toriola stated, "Law Enforcement Agencies have been mandated to apprehend defaulters. I urge vehicle owners to comply with the State Government to strengthen the security architecture already put in place."

Moreover, Toriola advised motorists to clean their license plates with water rather than chemicals, to prevent damage or fading. He emphasized that license plates serve as a critical tool for proper identification and security, thereby urging all vehicle owners to cooperate with the government's efforts to enhance security measures.

The state government's move to enforce stricter regulations regarding license plates comes as part of its wider commitment to ensuring public safety and combating rising insecurity concerns within Lagos and beyond.
