AGRICULTURE: Enugu State Gov't Unveils Innovative Strategies for Cassava-Based Products at the "2023 Africa Cassava Conference" Targeting Global Market

Hosted at the NAF Conference Center in Abuja, the 2023 Africa Cassava Conference served as a platform for uniting leaders, experts, and stakeholders, all converging to explore the potential of cassava-based products within Africa and their pivotal role in the continent's industrialization efforts. A significant highlight of the conference was Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah's ambitious vision to establish Enugu State as a prominent export hub for cash crops. The comprehensive plan for this vision was presented by Hon. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, the Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-industrialisation.

Honorable Ubru underscored the vital role of cassava in the economy of Enugu State, emphasizing its potential as a catalyst for industrialization. He stated, "Enugu State, renowned for its substantial cassava production, is embarking on an initiative to cultivate 300,000 hectares of farmland across its 17 local government areas. This initiative aims to expand cassava production, nurture related industries, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and ensure food security."

In his address, Hon. Ubru further outlined, "Enugu State is proactively establishing a land bank to streamline land acquisition for agricultural purposes, with the aim of attracting both domestic and foreign investments across the cassava value chain. This will foster industrialization and spur economic growth."

He went on to highlight the versatility and adaptability of cassava, showcasing its potential in diverse sectors such as food, feed, energy, and textiles. Enugu State's strategic plan includes forging partnerships with private investors to develop the cassava-to-ethanol value chain, aligning with sustainability goals. The state places a strong emphasis on value addition and agro-processing, setting up modern processing centers to convert cassava into high-value products, including flour, starch, ethanol, and industrial raw materials.

Quality control and adherence to international standards form the core of Enugu State's approach, with the primary goal of boosting consumer confidence and expanding opportunities for trade and investment.

Governor Peter Mbah's unwavering commitment to drive Africa's industrialization through cassava-based products is evident, recognizing cassava's potential as a driver of economic growth, poverty reduction, and sustainable development. The state extends an open invitation to all stakeholders to join in this transformative journey.

The 2023 Africa Cassava Conference has not only served as a unifying force but also as a reminder to African leaders of the immense potential within cassava-based products. It has set the stage for a prosperous and industrially thriving future. This assembly of national, regional, and international participants promises to foster collaborations, share knowledge, and devise innovative solutions to propel Africa's cassava industry forward.
