The Director General of the initiative, Hon. Arinze Emmanuel Eze, highlighted that the project was designed to address eye health issues among women, particularly the elderly in rural areas who have limited access to eye care services. "This project supports the mission of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Iheoma Mbah, in enhancing women's welfare in the state," Eze stated. He noted the First Lady’s efforts in areas like child abuse prevention, breast cancer awareness, domestic violence, and overall welfare, and expressed a desire to contribute through this eye care program.

The initiative was officially launched during the August Meeting, an annual event significant to women in Igboland, under the theme “Eliminating Abuse to Foster a Healthy Society.” The event saw a significant turnout of women from across the state.

Dr. Jude Ilodibe Onoja, the Medical Director of Balija Eye Care Foundation, addressed the attendees about the importance of eye care. He expressed gratitude for the women’s willingness to embrace the initiative and outlined the common eye conditions affecting the elderly in Africa, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Onoja emphasized the need for regular eye check-ups and announced that his team would soon embark on a tour across all three senatorial zones in Enugu State to offer free eye exams, treatments, and distribute lenses to those in need.

The 2024 Enugu Women August Meeting unveiling ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Hajiya Nana Shettima, who represented the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Remi Tinubu. In her address, Hajiya Shettima praised the efforts of the Enugu State government, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in combating abuse and promoting women’s welfare.

Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the Wife of the Governor of Enugu State, expressed her appreciation for the support from the First Lady of Nigeria and reiterated the significance of the August Meeting in Igbo culture. She commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for its role in empowering women through various programs and expressed hope that the new eye care initiative would further enhance the well-being of Enugu's women.

The "Sight is Life For Enugu Women" program is set to make a significant impact, providing essential eye care services and support to the women of Enugu State, aligning with ongoing efforts to improve health and welfare across the region.
