BREAKING: Enugu State Ministry to Review Guidelines for Cultural Festivals, Implement Stricter Regulations for Conduct of Masquerades



Expressing deep sorrow over the recent senseless loss of lives Enugu State, Enugu State Ministry of Culture and Tourism has strongly condemned the tragic killings that marred the recent Oriokpa Masquerade festival. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the community, is viewed as a violation of the state's rich cultural heritage and the core values of peace and communal harmony that its traditions uphold. The Ministry, while mourning with the affected families, assured the public of the Enugu State Government's commitment to justice and unity during this time of grief.


Dame Ugochi Madueke, the Honourable Commissioner for Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, voiced the government's outrage, stating that the purpose of masquerades in Enugu’s culture is to unite, uplift spirituality, and promote communal harmony. She reiterated that violence has no place in these sacred traditions. In response to the incident, the Ministry is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for the heinous acts are swiftly brought to justice.


In a bid to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, the Ministry has initiated discussions with cultural custodians and traditional rulers across the state. The goal is to implement stronger safeguards during cultural festivals, particularly those involving masquerades. The Commissioner highlighted that the Ministry would review existing guidelines and introduce stricter regulations to ensure that the safety of all participants and spectators is prioritized during these events.


The government has called on all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and cultural custodians, to work together to restore the integrity of Enugu’s cultural celebrations. The Ministry stressed the need for cooperation in maintaining peace and order during festivals to preserve the state’s cultural heritage. While acknowledging the importance of these festivals, the Ministry emphasized that they must be conducted in a manner that reflects the values of peace, respect, and inclusion that Enugu is known for.


The Enugu State Government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the preservation of its cultural heritage in ways that foster unity and safety for all involved. The public has been urged to cooperate fully with efforts to maintain these ideals, ensuring that future cultural events reflect the true essence of Enugu's traditions.

Enugu: Finally, Suspected Killers of Ogbete Market Chairman Arrested

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested two suspects linked to the killing of Mr. Stephen Aniagu, Chairman of the Ogbete Main Market Traders’ Association (OMMATA).
