Tension has reached a boiling point in Enugu following the tragic killing of beloved Ogene musician, Okezie Chikezie Mba, known by his stage name Igbo-Jah. The incident, involving an officer from the Enugu State Police Command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, has ignited widespread protests throughout the city, with outraged youths expressing their anger against the rising cases of police brutality.
Eyewitnesses reported that the musician had just concluded a casual visit to the anti-cult office on the evening of October 25, 2024, when, under unclear circumstances, he was shot by a police inspector within the unit. Attempts to save Igbo-Jah were unsuccessful as he was declared dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
In reaction to the tragedy, protestors have mobilized across Enugu, with notable unrest in the Obiagu and Asata areas where youths have set up bonfires. The tragic loss has become a rallying cry for justice, bringing attention to the perceived indifference and unchecked behavior within the Enugu State Police.
The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, who announced that the involved officer had been arrested and detained for the alleged murder. Ndukwe detailed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has mandated an exhaustive investigation, assigning the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to ensure that the officer, and any other responsible parties, face swift disciplinary actions.
In his official statement, CP Uzuegbu expressed deep condolences to Igbo-Jah’s family, friends, and followers, condemning the act as intolerable. He reassured the public that the police will enforce accountability, underscoring that any individuals found culpable will face consequences designed to deter future misconduct. However, his assurances have done little to ease the frustration and skepticism among the local youth.
The tragedy has intensified long-standing grievances over police brutality within Enugu, sparking calls for police reform and a re-evaluation of practices within the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad. The Commissioner has urged residents to remain calm, promising justice, yet the ongoing protests reflect a community that feels repeatedly failed by those sworn to protect them.
