WATCH Heartwarming Moment in Senate as Senator Ngwu Defends 'Beautiful Sister' Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu During Ministerial Screening

In a heartwarming moment during the Senate’s ministerial screening today, Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu West Senatorial District affectionately referred to ministerial nominee Bianca Olivia Odinaka Odumegwu-Ojukwu as "My Beautiful Sister" while advocating for her suitability for the role.

The Senate chamber was filled with laughter and camaraderie as Ngwu defended Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s qualifications, drawing on her notable career and accomplishments.

The lightheartedness continued when Senate President Godswill Akpabio humorously interjected, asking whether "beautiful" was included in her CV. Standing his ground, Senator Ngwu, supported by other senators, confidently replied that "beautiful" was indeed part of her CV—pointing out, with a smile, that it was an undeniable part of her success.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu, nominated by President Bola Tinubu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, responded to the humor with grace, and soon proceeded to outline her diplomatic achievements. She reflected on her tenure as Nigeria's ambassador to Spain, sharing the challenges she faced, including having to live in a hotel for a year due to the embassy's deteriorated condition. The dilapidated state of the mission building, located near Spain’s prestigious Galagao estate, had caused embarrassment for her and the country she represented, prompting her to launch a comprehensive refurbishment project.

Her leadership and resilience led to significant improvements in the embassy’s facilities, which she noted now better reflect Nigeria’s global stature. She shared that “The Nigerian embassy in Madrid that you see today is the product of my time in that country,” underscoring her commitment to enhancing Nigeria's image abroad.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted that Nigerian embassies worldwide face challenges due to inadequate funding, which hinders essential maintenance and renovations. She urged the Nigerian government to prioritize embassy upkeep, as dignified diplomatic spaces are crucial for hosting international engagements that advance Nigeria's foreign policy objectives.

The session ended on a high note, with Odumegwu-Ojukwu receiving warm applause and encouragement from the Senate. She was asked to take a bow, leaving the chamber amid commendations for her past service. Her screening served as a reminder of her capabilities and dedication, underscoring the critical need for enhanced support for Nigerian diplomatic missions.
