Enugu Governor’s Wife Rounds Up Statewide Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence Accross the 17 Local Government Councils
The First Lady of Enugu State, Her Excellency, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has successfully concluded her ongoing statewide campaign marking the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign which was officially flaged-off on the 25th of November, 2024, was launched with great fervor in Enugu and extended across all 17 local government areas through the wives of the local government chairman has left a trail of empowerment, awareness, and hope for the women and girls in the state. This annual global campaign rounds up on Tuesday, the 10th of December, 2024.

In Nkanu East Local Government Council hosted by the ALGON Chairlady, Mrs Rita Edeh, the First Lady led impactful conversations and action plans aimed at ending violence against women and girls in the state, while a mammoth gathering of women benefited from various empowerment.

Igbo-Eze South also witnessed distribution of food items, grassroots engagement, and was concluded with a medical outreach. The wife of the council chairman, Barr Empress Ugo-Ferdinand, rallied the support of traditional leaders, community organizations, and political stakeholders to create a unified front against gender-based violence.

The people of Awgu Local Government Area also gave a warmth reception to the First Lady’s team. Residents of Udenu, Nkanu West, Enugu East, Nsukka, Ezeagu, Uzo-uwani, Oji River, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Etiti, Udi, Enugu South LGAs all benefited
At each stop, Mrs. Mbah delivered powerful messages emphasizing the need for education, economic empowerment, and legal protections for women and girls. “This campaign is about more than awareness. It is about inspiring real change ensuring that every woman and girl in Enugu can live without fear and fulfill her potential,” stated her representative during one of the events.
Her Excellency’s passion and commitment were evident throughout the campaign as her team tirelessly advocated for systemic change and community-driven solutions.
Over 5,000 women were empowered with food items, wrappers, clothes, Cash gifts, toiletries and other household items that served as their Christmas packages. Medical outreach were also conducted in different local governments like Nkanu West, Igbo-EzeSouth, etc; where women were diagnosed, treated and sensitised on health education.The First Lady also announced plans for follow-up programs, including skill acquisition schemes for women, support for survivors, and stronger collaboration with law enforcement to address gender-based violence.
The Chairlady of Nkanu East Local Government Council, who also doubles as the State ALGON Chairperson, Mrs. Rita Edeh and other council leaders played pivotal roles in supporting the campaign. Mrs. Rita Edeh described the initiative as “a movement close to her heart” and called on every stakeholder to sustain the momentum created by the First Lady.

While the campaign draws to a close, the people of Enugu State have applauded the First Lady for her commitment to ending violence amongst women. Her efforts have not only raised awareness but also fostered a deeper understanding of the role individuals and communities must play in eradicating this menace.
The campaign’s impact is already being felt, with many communities pledging to take concrete steps to protect women and girls. Traditional rulers committed to reinforcing cultural values that uphold respect and equality, while local organizations vowed to intensify advocacy and provide support for survivors.

The First Lady’s initiative has also inspired hope for the future, as she announced plans for the establishment of resource centers across the state to provide counseling, legal aid, and vocational training for victims of gender-based violence.
The 16 Days of Activism may have concluded, but the legacy of the First Lady’s campaign is set to endure, inspiring lasting change and laying the foundation for a brighter, more equitable future in Enugu State.
