BREAKING! Nigerian Hackers Breach UnitedHealthcare Database, Steal Private Files of 120 Million Americans

A group of Nigerian hackers has reportedly infiltrated the UnitedHealthcare database, stealing over six terabytes of confidential health records and personal information of 120 million Americans. The breach, which took place in February 2024, has been described as one of the largest in healthcare history.

The cyberattack was part of a coordinated effort that led to the theft of sensitive data, including names, addresses, emails, and social security numbers of registered UnitedHealthcare clients. This data is now the subject of a class-action lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, with over 60 Americans seeking redress after their private health data was compromised.

According to court filings, the hacking operation, which began on February 21, 2024, was primarily orchestrated by the Russia-based BlackCat group, though much of the data was downloaded by Nigerian hackers, with some activity also originating from Russia and Brazil. The stolen files were quickly disseminated across five continents, including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, with the largest concentration of downloads coming from Nigeria and Russia.

The lawsuit, filed on January 15, 2025, highlights the widespread distribution of the stolen data, which was quickly spread and accessed by 47 different parties. The plaintiffs argue that the breach compromised not only their personal data but also their trust in the healthcare system’s ability to protect sensitive information.

The breach is being considered one of the most significant in the healthcare industry, raising questions about the security measures employed by organizations handling sensitive personal data. As the affected parties seek justice, the global ramifications of the attack continue to unfold.

This breach adds to a growing list of cybercrimes involving Nigerian hackers, further raising concerns about the increasing sophistication and reach of cybercriminal organizations.

Legal experts and cybersecurity specialists are closely monitoring the situation, as the case progresses in the U.S. courts, and are urging organizations to strengthen their data protection policies in the wake of such high-profile incidents.
