BREAKING: Govt Declares Voter Registration Mandatory

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared that voter registration is now a compulsory obligation for every eligible citizen in the state.

The governor made this known on Friday while inaugurating a 36-member Committee on Voter Registration and Civic Awareness at the Government House. He tasked the committee with ensuring that at least 10 million voters are captured in the ongoing nationwide registration exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the governor, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Faruk Umar Ibrahim, described the assignment as tough but critical to deepening democracy.

“You should know that your exercise is a Herculean task that requires diligence and dedication. Your mandate is to ensure that Kano registers an additional five million voters by the end of this exercise,” Ibrahim said.

He explained that the committee’s responsibilities include monitoring polling units, ensuring citizens collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and working closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to guarantee availability of voter cards.

“As of today, Kano is the most populous state in the federation with high political awareness. We expect those who were earlier disenfranchised to seize this opportunity. Governor Yusuf is watching you, and it is only through voter registration that Kano will elect leaders of integrity with passion for development,” he added.
