Enugu Private School Owners Cry Out Over Excessive Taxation, Unfair Policies

Private school owners in Enugu State have raised alarm over what they described as excessive taxation and unfair policies imposed by the state government, warning that the situation threatens the survival of their institutions.

The school owners lamented that they are being forced to pay taxes ranging between N450,000 and N2.2 million, depending on the size of the school. They accused the government of prioritizing revenue generation over support for education.

Other grievances include the requirement for schools to conduct a unified SS2 exam as a condition for WAEC and NECO registration, the compulsory collection of census figures, and the directive to upload school data on the ministry’s portal during the holiday period. In addition, the state government has ordered the shutdown of unapproved private schools, citing substandard facilities and lack of proper registration.

The stakeholders warned that the policies could lead to widespread school closures, massive job losses among teachers and staff, and an impending education crisis in the state.

They, however, proposed solutions such as a downward review of taxes, categorization of schools into high, medium, and low-cost for fair taxation, and the provision of financial and material support to struggling schools. They also called for a 3-year moratorium to enable schools upgrade their facilities, as well as dialogue and consultation with private school owners to ensure mutually beneficial policies. Furthermore, they urged the government to extend the deadline for data uploads to allow compliance after the holiday period.

The development underscores the tension between private education stakeholders and the Enugu State Government, with calls for a more inclusive and supportive approach to education policy.
