Governor Peter Mbah Unveils Reconstructed Hotel Presidential in Enugu
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State has officially unveiled the newly reconstructed Hotel Presidential, Enugu, marking what he described as the “rebirth of a legacy” and a bold step in reviving the state’s hospitality and tourism sector.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Mbah traced the history of the landmark hotel, built 62 years ago under Dr. Michael Okpara, lamenting its neglect and abandonment for over 15 years. He said his administration’s intervention was part of a deliberate strategy to convert dormant assets into productive ventures and reposition Enugu as the preferred destination for investment, tourism, living, and leisure.
The governor revealed that the hotel’s revamp was executed to world-class standards and entrusted to Amber Hospitality, operators of over 12 successful brands in Nigeria, following a competitive concession process. Contractors, Dilworth, and the State Commissioners of Works, Culture, and Tourism were also commended for their contributions.
Highlighting its strategic importance, Governor Mbah noted that the hotel complements other major projects such as the 5,000-seat International Conference Centre (ICC), the 345-room ICC Hotel under construction, and the recently launched Enugu Air. Together, he said, these facilities aim to transform Enugu into the Conferencing Capital of Africa while boosting tourism and creating thousands of jobs.
Mbah emphasized that the reopening of Hotel Presidential is not merely a nostalgic gesture but “heritage re-engineered” to meet the expectations of modern travelers, offering upgraded rooms, safety systems, culinary services, and digital facilities.
The governor also stressed that the project would foster local opportunities by linking hospitality to agriculture, small businesses, and training programmes. He revealed that IMT’s accredited hospitality programme, in partnership with Dewdrop Hospitality Academy and UK’s City and Guilds, will enable Enugu youths to gain international certifications for employment in prestigious hotels worldwide.
Describing the project as a catalyst for economic transformation, Governor Mbah pledged to continue unlocking opportunities across moribund assets while ensuring that the people of Enugu benefit from jobs, investments, and cultural growth.
“It is with pride that I unveil the reconstructed Hotel Presidential to the glory of God and the prosperity of our people,” he declared.
