Ezeugwu, Peter Obi Speak on Electoral Reform as Key to Good Governance at CPO Summit/Book Launch
...Renews Call for Electoral Reform Ahead of 2027
Former Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu PhD, was on Thursday, September 11, 2025, honoured to chair the public presentation of a new book chronicling the activities of all the support groups of Mr. Peter Obi during the 2023 elections. The historic event, which also doubled as the third annual National Coalition for Peter Obi Summit, was held in Abuja and drew prominent voices in Nigeria’s democracy and governance discourse.
In his remarks, Dr. Ezeugwu commended the author and organizers for documenting the collective struggles of support groups that galvanized millions of Nigerians, particularly the youth, in the 2023 general elections. He described the book as a timely reminder of the spirit of unity that propelled the "Obedient Movement" and stressed the importance of sustaining that momentum as the nation marches toward 2027.
According to him, the event was not just a book launch but a call to action. “We cannot continue to be doing the same thing every day and expect a different result. The bottom line is electoral reform, electoral reform, and electoral reform,” he said emphatically. Ezeugwu further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and ad hoc staff, most of whom are youths, to rise above compromise and safeguard Nigeria’s democracy. “This is about each and every one of us. Let them do the correct thing so that we will have a society that will be very, very beneficial to us,” he declared.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Haruna Goro, speaking virtually, reinforced Ezeugwu’s call by warning that Nigeria’s cycle of bad leadership cannot be broken unless the flawed electoral process is fixed. “We cannot expect the same people who destroyed the system to repair it. Those who benefit from corruption will not end corruption. If reforms are not made now, 2027 will be business as usual,” he cautioned.
The book reviewer, Peter Amed, described the publication as a compelling narrative of how hope was reborn in Nigeria through collective action. He emphasized that electoral reform and a justice system anchored on fairness are the foundations of a truly democratic society. “Without law and order, we will have issues that remain pending unending, and justice delayed is justice denied,” he added.
The high point of the summit was the address delivered by Mr. Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, who echoed the central theme of the day, credible elections as the pathway to good governance. Obi stressed that “the process through which people come into office is far more fundamental than even what they do when in office. If the process is faulty, you are likely going to have bad governance.” He challenged citizens to take charge, saying Nigerians have endured enough poor leadership and must now insist on accountability.
Activist Aisha Yusufu also made a passionate intervention, urging Nigerians to resist electoral injustice by protecting their votes. “We have to stand and ensure that the process that brings people into office is not manipulated. Our votes must count,” she charged.

The consensus at the Abuja summit and book launch was clear: electoral reform is Nigeria’s last chance to restore public trust, end corruption, and secure the future.
