Tinubu Rejects New Scramble for Africa at AU

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria delivered a powerful speech at the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (5thMYCM) of the African Union (AU) in Nairobi, Kenya, reaffirming Africa's unity and strength while strongly rejecting the notion of a new scramble for Africa. The President warned against the plundering and exploitation of the continent, emphasizing that such actions should remain in the past and never be repeated.

In his capacity as the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu highlighted the progress made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in various sectors of its integration process. He emphasized the need for Africa to overcome its challenges and work towards a prosperous future, focusing on inclusive growth, good governance, and leveraging the opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

President Tinubu called for visionary good governance and rejected the idea of a new scramble for Africa, asserting that Africa's spirit is strong and that past exploitations must stay in the past. He urged Africans to forge ahead despite the barriers they face, emphasizing that passive observation of their fate is not an option.

The Nigerian leader also addressed the importance of peace, security, and stability in the region. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the sub-region, including terrorism and anti-constitutional changes in government. President Tinubu stressed that the fullness of the integration Africa seeks will elude them as long as nations suffer from violence and conflict. He called for unity and collective efforts to achieve peace and prosperity across the continent.

On trade, President Tinubu highlighted ECOWAS's achievements in establishing the Free Trade Area and working towards the Customs Union and Common Market. However, he expressed concern about the low level of intra-community trade among member states. He emphasized the need to consolidate the gains of the trade liberalization scheme and support the implementation of the AfCFTA.

President Tinubu also discussed regional infrastructure development, emphasizing the importance of building regional infrastructure to promote economic activities and integration. He provided updates on ongoing projects, including the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor Highway and preparations for the development of other corridors.

The Nigerian leader further touched upon energy interconnections, investment promotion, cybersecurity, and the joint border post between Nigeria and Cameroon, which serves as a bridge between ECOWAS and ECCAS, facilitating future cooperation and integration between the regions.

President Tinubu expressed his honor to participate in the Mid-Year Meeting of the AU and commended the organization for its efforts in strengthening collaboration and coordination between continental and regional bodies. He extended his gratitude to the government and people of Kenya for hosting the meeting and providing excellent facilities for the participants.

President Tinubu's speech resonated with the audience at the AU meeting, highlighting the importance of unity, good governance, and overcoming challenges for Africa's progress and prosperity. His rejection of a new scramble for Africa and his emphasis on learning from past exploitations reflect a commitment to a brighter future for the continent
