Enugu Shines! West African Youth Congress to Honor Enugu Chartered Accountant, Prof Nweze, other African Academic Administrators in 2023 WAYS Prestigious Leadership Awards


In a remarkable development that marks a significant milestone for Enugu State, Professor Augustine Uchechukwu Nweze, esteemed Chartered Accountant and Chairman of the Rectors of State-owned Polytechnics in Nigeria, has emerged as a distinguished nominee for the forthcoming 2023 WAYS Prestigious Leadership Awards. This prestigious recognition, presented by the ECOWAS Youth Wing and the West African Youth Congress (WAYC), extends to other prominent academic administrators hailing from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Senegal.

The West African Youth Congress meticulously evaluates the contributions of leaders within the Sub-region, drawing upon an intricate network of interconnected organizations across different countries. These organizations provide annual reports, enabling the congress to identify and celebrate individuals who have made significant strides in various realms of leadership across West Africa.

Prof. Uchechukwu Nweze's nomination is a testament to his unwavering dedication and competence as an academic administrator. Having served as the Zonal Coordinator of the Rectors in the South East Geopolitical zone of Nigeria and currently holding the position of National Treasurer for COHEADS (Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria), his contributions to education have been widely acknowledged.

Born on the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1960 in Obollo Afor, Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria, Professor Augustine Uchechukwu Nweze embarked on a remarkable educational journey. Despite initially starting as a Grade II Teacher, specializing in teaching Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, and Physics in Secondary Schools after training at Lourdes Training College in Iwollo, Enugu State, he astonishingly achieved a perfect score of 100% in Mathematics during the 1983 University Matriculation Examination, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board. This exceptional feat was accomplished without attending a Secondary School.

Prof. Uchechukwu Nweze's academic pursuits led to the attainment of a BSc Degree in Accountancy in 1987, followed by an MBA in 1992, and both an MSc and a PhD in 1999 and 2002, respectively, all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Professionally, he became a Chartered Accountant and earned membership in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) as an Associate member (ACA) in 1992 and an Associate member (ACTI) of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) in 1996. In 2003, he attained the esteemed status of Fellow (FCA and FCTI) in both ICAN and CITN, in addition to being appointed a Justice of Peace (JP).

Professor Nweze's career journey commenced in August 1988 at the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu. In December 1988, he accepted a position at Anambra Broadcasting Service, Enugu. In 1990, he transitioned to Orient Bank of Nigeria Plc, where he served as Operations Officer in various branches across Nigeria. By 1992, he had become an Assistant Manager (Operations) at Royal Merchant Bank Limited.

Recognizing the changing dynamics of the banking industry, Professor Nweze chose to pursue a career in academia in 1995. He joined Enugu State University of Science and Technology as a Lecturer. In 2009, he achieved the distinguished rank of Professor, becoming the First Professor of Accounting at Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

Subsequently, under the leadership of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi, Professor A. U. Nweze was appointed as the Rector of the Institute of Management and Technology, effective from June 10, 2016.

Professor Augustine Uchechukwu Nweze, PhD, FCA, FCTI, JP, enjoys a harmonious marriage with Dr. Bernadine Ngozichukwu Nweze, who is associated with the Department of Science Education at Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu. His remarkable journey serves as an inspiring testament to dedication, education, and excellence, making him a worthy nominee for the 2023 WAYS Prestigious Leadership Awards, recognizing his significant contributions to education and leadership in the West African region.
