ENUGU: The Ministry of Labour and Employment Activates "Inspectorate Unit" For monitoring Workplaces for Industrial Safety, Workers' Welfare, & Employment Data Collection, Among Other Crucial Tasks

The Enugu State Ministry of Labour and Employment has launched a groundbreaking initiative to foster strategic partnerships with key employers of labor in the region. The initiative is spearheaded by the Commissioner of Labour and Employment, Hon. Pharm Chika Ugwuoke.

The strategic engagement began with a pivotal visit to the Nigeria Bottling Company Plc, once one of Africa's largest employers of labor. The company had, unfortunately, shut down its production plant in 2018, resulting in substantial job losses for Enugu citizens.

The former bustling Nigerian Bottling Company production plant has since been downgraded to a mere depot, and the repercussions of this shutdown have been deeply felt by the local workforce. Commissioner Ugwuoke expressed his determination to fight for the restoration of some, if not all, of the plants that were moved out of the state, emphasizing the importance of job creation for Enugu's residents.

The Commissioner's team paid a visit to the Seven Up Bottling Company, where they were impressed by the company's employment of Enugu citizens. Hon. Ugwuoke disclosed that nearly 40% of the staff at Seven Up are Ndi Enugu, showcasing the competence and capability of the local workforce.

He urged the Seven Up Bottling Company to further engage competent Enugu indigenes and prioritize the welfare of employees to align with global standards. In his words, "The best way to tackle unemployment is by creating the enabling environment for businesses to thrive. The Ministry will ensure total collaboration between the state government and these companies to create more jobs in the state."

The Commissioner's team also included the newly activated inspectorate unit of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, responsible for inspecting workplaces for industrial safety, workers' welfare, and employment data collection, among other crucial tasks. Hon. Ugwuoke assured the companies that these inspectors and safety officers are there to support and uphold international labor standards rather than to extort.

The companies, in turn, appealed for government intervention to address the badly deteriorated roads, particularly those leading to Nsukka and the northern regions. Improving road infrastructure would facilitate the movement of their products and contribute to the success of these employment-generating businesses. This strategic partnership marks a promising step towards revitalizing Enugu State's job market and economic growth.
