Enugu: Mburubu 'Kingmakers' Council of Chiefs Denounce Controversial Self- Acclaimed Traditional Ruler


The Mburubu Council of Chiefs, also known as the Igwe Cabinet, has officially disowned Mr. Jerry Patrick Onukaibe, who recently proclaimed himself as the 'Igwe-elect' of Mburubu Kingdom. The council, in a communiqué released on Saturday, vehemently refuted any endorsement or recognition of Onukaibe for the revered position of traditional ruler.

According to the communiqué, the council expressed deep embarrassment over Onukaibe's self-presentation to the Chairman of Nkanu East LGA, labeling it as an act of impersonation and emphasizing that he was never nominated, selected, or recommended by the community for such a role.

The document clarified that since the passing of His Majesty, Igwe Emmanuel Ezeh (Ozulumba I of Mburubu Kingdom), the community has not undergone the customary process of selecting a new Igwe, as per Mburubu Kingdom's customs and traditions. Furthermore, the Mburubu Town Union was affirmed as the only recognized organization representing the community, discrediting any other entity claiming to speak on behalf of Mburubu Kingdom.

While denouncing the purported presentation of Mr. Jerry Patrick Onukaibe to the Nkanu East Local Government by what they referred to as a 'kangarooed' group of individuals, the Mburubu Council of Chiefs called on Mr. Jerry Patrick Onukaibe to immediately cease presenting himself as the Igwe-elect and cautioned against actions that they deemed subversive. They emphasized that the Mburubu General Assembly, which attempted the presentation, lacked the authority to appoint anyone as Igwe-elect due to the kingdom's composition of seven villages.

The council conclusively denounced media publications related to Onukaibe's purported Igwe-elect status, dismissing them as "brazen deceit" and an attempt to mislead the public, government and security agencies, as well as the sons and daughters of Mburubu Kingdom.
