Enugu Pregnant Woman Gives Birth in Kidnappers’ Den, Family Pays N1.6 Million Ransom for Freedom of Mother and New Born

In a harrowing tale of survival, Chinwendu Igwe, a pregnant woman from Enugu State, found herself giving birth in the heart of a kidnappers' den. The incident unfolded last Monday when Chinwendu, accompanied by her two young children aged between two and four years, was abducted while en route to the hospital for childbirth. Held captive in the dense forests of Egede, Udi local government area, Chinwendu went into labor and delivered a bouncing baby boy.

Her husband, Mr. Ekene Igwe, confirmed the ordeal to reporters, revealing that a ransom of N1.6 million was paid to secure the release of his wife and newborn child. The kidnappers demanded the ransom and instructed Ekene to deposit it in the forest in Egede.

"I paid a ransom of N1.6 million before I could get my wife and the newborn baby," Ekene Igwe disclosed.

He expressed gratitude to God for the safe return of his family. However, the ordeal has left deep scars, and Chinwendu, along with her newborn child, requires extensive support and care to recover from the trauma.

Amidst this traumatic experience, it is imperative that Chinwendu and her newborn child receive the necessary medical attention, psychosocial support, and assistance to reintegrate into their community. Their rehabilitation process should be carefully monitored to ensure their physical and psychological well-being.

Moreover, efforts must be intensified to apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous crime and bring them to justice. Accountability is crucial not only to deliver justice to the victims but also to deter future acts of violence and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. The safety and security of the residents must be prioritized, and stringent measures should be put in place to curb such incidents in the future.
