DISCLAIMER: ENSIEC Urges All Political Parties to Disregard Invitation to A One-day Workshop Bearing its Letter-Head

The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) in a letter dated 27/08/2024, urges all political parties to disregard a purported letter of a one-day workshop, stating that it is an NGO, Pat and Pegos Consult's idea and exclusive project.

ENSIEC statement read:

DISCLAIMER

INVITATION TO A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP

This is to inform the general public. especially the political parties that dated 19/08/2024 with reference number EN/SIEC/AD/24/03 in respect to the above subject matter did not emanate from the office of the Executive Chairman of Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).

This letter a creation of an NGO named Pat and Begos Consult.

The use of ENSIEC letter headed paper for this purpose is an error and must be disregarded by all political parties.

The NGO should have used its own letter headed paper and added what it is intended to in full collaboration with ENSIEC, since it is the NGO's idea and exclusive project.

Please note that ENSIEC does not charge any fee whatsoever to political parties and her candidates.

Recall that the concerned citizens of People of Enugu State, CCPE a prominent advocacy group focused on ensuring transparency and inclusiveness in Enugu's political landscape, has expressed deep concerns about the implications of such a hefty financial demand on aspiring political candidates. In a statement released today, the group denounced the workshop fee as not only excessive but also as a mechanism that could effectively disenfranchise many qualified candidates who lack the financial resources to meet this requirement.

At a time when Enugu State, like much of Nigeria, is grappling with significant economic challenges, the imposition of such a high fee is seen as particularly tone-deaf. The state is currently facing high unemployment rates, inflation, and a cost-of-living crisis that has put a strain on many households. In this context, the decision to demand such a large sum from candidates raises questions about the commission’s commitment to broadening the political landscape and ensuring a level playing field for all potential leaders.

"This fee is a clear barrier to democracy," said a spokesperson for the CCPE. "It will undoubtedly prevent many capable and deserving individuals from participating in the upcoming elections simply because they cannot afford to pay. This not only limits the pool of candidates but also undermines the very foundation of our democratic system, which should be built on inclusiveness and equal opportunity for all."
