BREAKING: Justice Nyako Withdraws From Nnamdi Kanu’s Treason Trial Over Ultimatum

In the ongoing treason trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has officially withdrawn from the case. The decision came after Kanu personally requested that she recuse herself during the hearing on Tuesday.

At the commencement of the session, Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, pleaded with the court to delay the trial. He argued that his client had been denied sufficient opportunity to prepare his defense adequately. However, before Ejimakor could finish his submission, Kanu interrupted, instructing his lawyer to sit down.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has recused herself from the ongoing treason trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The decision came during Tuesday's court session following a direct request from Kanu himself.

Kanu, who has been at the center of the trial concerning his separatist activities, expressed his dissatisfaction with the court’s handling of the case. Shortly after his lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, urged the court to postpone the trial citing inadequate time to prepare a defense, Kanu interrupted, instructing Ejimakor to stop speaking.

“Sit down! I say you should sit down,” Kanu commanded, before directly addressing the court. “My lord, I have no confidence in this court anymore, and I ask you to recuse yourself because you did not abide by the decision of the Supreme Court.”

Kanu expressed frustration with the court’s failure to comply with a Supreme Court ruling regarding his case. He emphasized that while he could understand if the Department of State Services (DSS) disobeyed court orders, he found it unacceptable for the court itself to disregard the Supreme Court's decision.

Prosecution lawyer Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) had called for the trial to proceed, but Justice Nyako, after listening to Kanu’s plea, opted to withdraw from the case.

“I hereby recuse myself and remit the case file back to the Chief Judge,” Justice Nyako stated, marking the end of her involvement in the high-profile trial.

This latest development adds another layer of complexity to Nnamdi Kanu’s legal battles. Kanu, a prominent figure in the Biafran separatist movement, has been involved in numerous legal proceedings related to his calls for the independence of the southeast region of Nigeria. His trial has attracted significant attention both locally and internationally, especially among the Igbo community and supporters of Biafra.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court will now decide the next steps, including the appointment of a new judge to handle the case. Kanu’s supporters and legal team remain hopeful for a favorable outcome, while the Nigerian government continues to press charges of treason and other related offenses.

This latest withdrawal by Justice Nyako could lead to further delays in a case that has already faced multiple adjournments and complications since it began.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
