GOOD NEWS: Governor Approves N200,000 Monthly Allowance for School Principals

The Executive Governor, of Ahmed Aliyu, has approved a N200,000 monthly maintenance allowance for principals of secondary schools across the state. The announcement was made on Monday during the Sokoto State 2025 Citizens Budget Discussion, which took place at the Sultan Abubakar Maccido Institute of Quranic and General Studies.

The initiative followed a request by the former deputy governor of Sokoto State, Chiso Abdullahi, who urged the governor to provide funds to help school principals cover the immediate maintenance needs of their schools. Abdullahi explained that the allowance would assist in repairing minor damages to infrastructure and would allow schools to mobilize workers like carpenters and masons to carry out repairs without waiting for long government approval processes.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Abubakar Bawa, confirmed the approval, stating that the N200,000 monthly allowance would be given to each secondary school principal across the 23 local government areas in the state, with payments set to begin in January 2025.

In addition, Governor Aliyu has instructed the state commissioner for local government affairs, Dadi Adare, to review the allowances of traditional rulers in Sokoto State. This follows a request made by Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, the district head of Kilgori, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto during the discussion. Kilgori appealed for an adjustment in traditional rulers’ allowances to reflect the current economic conditions.

These measures reflect the governor’s ongoing efforts to address pressing issues in education and local governance, as well as his responsiveness to the needs of both the educational and traditional sectors in Sokoto State.
