TRAGEDY: Again, Anambra Security Operatives Shoot Dead 17-Year-Old Boy [Full Details]

Tragedy in Onitsha: 17-Year-Old Boy Killed by Stray Bullet From Security Operatives

Tension gripped the residents of Ifejike Street by Sokoto Road, near the bustling Biafra Market in Onitsha South Local Government Area, as a 17-year-old boy was tragically killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by operatives of the Anambra State security outfit, Agụnechemba.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victim, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was seated on a culvert near the Nwangene Drainage when he was struck by the bullet. The security agents were reportedly in pursuit of a fleeing suspect and opened fire indiscriminately during the operation.

"The boy was just sitting quietly, apparently waiting to use the toilet nearby when he was hit. It was chaos. Blood everywhere. He died instantly," one eyewitness recounted.

The incident sparked outrage among residents and traders who blocked the operatives' vehicle, preventing them from fleeing the scene. Amid pressure from the growing crowd, which included local vigilantes and market traders, the operatives were forced to carry the boy’s lifeless body into their official vehicle marked ANSG 0060.

The Agụnechemba operatives, according to residents, have been accused of similar unprofessional conduct in the past, with little or no consequences.

Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that two suspects believed to be involved in the shooting have been arrested.

“Police operatives attached to the Onitsha Main Market Division, with support from concerned traders, arrested the two suspects involved and recovered one automatic pump-action gun,” Ikenga said.

He added that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikoiye Orutugu, who condemned the “unprofessional and avoidable” actions of the security personnel.

The late teen’s death has reignited debates over the conduct, training, and accountability of state-backed security operatives, especially as the Agụnechemba team was only launched in March 2025 to complement federal security agencies in tackling insecurity in Anambra State.

The Anambra State Government is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
