GOOD NEWS!! Enugu State Govt Upgrades ESPOLY Iwollo to University of Agriculture
In a bold move to transform agriculture into the backbone of Enugu’s economy, Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah on Saturday announced the upgrade of the Enugu State Polytechnic, Iwollo, to a University of Agriculture, with an additional campus to be sited in Uzouwani Local Government Area.
The governor made the declaration at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, during the official flag-off of the free distribution of farm inputs to over 40,000 farmers out of the more than 60,000 already registered in the state.
Dr. Mbah, who has consistently emphasised agriculture as the driver of rural development and wealth creation, said the new University of Agriculture will serve as a breeding ground for the next generation of agricultural scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators, while also supporting the government’s plan to establish an Agro-Processing Zone. This, he explained, will give Enugu State the capability to process, package and export agricultural produce to both local and international markets.
According to him, the state is set to kick-start the initiative with a pilot agriculture industrial hub and three Agricultural Transformation Centres, which will serve as catalysts for job creation, rural industrialisation, and food security.
Highlighting ongoing investments in mechanisation, the governor revealed that the state had already taken delivery of 102 tractors, with another 98 set to arrive soon, while 800 tractors are currently being assembled locally at the Nortra assembling plant in Enugu, now at 95 percent completion. These efforts, he said, will give registered farmers unfettered access to modern, mechanised farming systems that will significantly boost productivity.
Reiterating the historical role of agriculture in sustaining the old Eastern Region’s economy, Mbah stressed that his administration’s investment in the sector is a deliberate step to grow Enugu’s economy to $30 billion and drastically reduce the poverty rate to zero.
“Farming is no longer a hobby but a vocation that requires professional insights, innovation, and technological inputs. With the right foundation, Enugu State will become a major exporter of agricultural products, and our farmers will be central to this transformation,” the governor said.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, described the initiative as a bold affirmation of Governor Mbah’s unwavering commitment to transforming rural communities into vibrant centres of economic growth and prosperity. He noted that the agricultural sector in Enugu State has never witnessed such attention and investment in its history.
Also speaking, the Enugu Farm Estate consultant, Alhaji Friday Sani-Nnaji, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, Hon. Ejike Eze, commended the governor for his visionary leadership in the sector. They assured the people that by 2026, food security will be fully guaranteed in Enugu State, given the pace of ongoing reforms.
At the event, more than 40,000 bags of fertiliser, over 100 tractors, and a variety of other farm inputs were distributed to registered farmers, further demonstrating the administration’s determination to empower farmers, create wealth, and make agriculture the pride of Enugu’s economy.
With these strategic steps, Governor Mbah has placed Enugu on the path to becoming not only a hub for agricultural excellence but also a model state for sustainable economic growth across Nigeria.
