NBA 43rd AGC: Malema, Sultan, Mbah Call for Unity, Respect for Rule of Law

The Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Sunday declared open the 43rd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, with calls for African unity, justice, and respect for the rule of law dominating discussions.

Delivering the keynote address, Julius Malema, President of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), urged African countries to unite under one central leadership and take control of their mineral resources to drive economic growth. He condemned colonial exploitation and warned against xenophobia, describing it as a betrayal of African unity caused by poverty, inequality, and government failure. Malema stressed that Nigeria and South Africa must lead the continent’s industrialisation and development, noting that their economic strength could fuel a new African revolution.

Chairman of the occasion, the Sultan of Sokoto, Dr. Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, cautioned that justice in Nigeria was increasingly becoming “a purchasable commodity,” where the poor suffer injustice while the rich evade accountability. He urged lawyers to uphold the rule of law, ensure fairness, and push for reforms that reflect Nigeria’s culture and values while also improving access to justice.

Declaring the conference open, Governor Peter Mbah said the law is not just a profession but the conscience of the nation. He highlighted his administration’s achievements in justice sector reform, including the implementation of financial autonomy for the judiciary, digitisation of courtrooms, expansion of alternative dispute resolution through the Enugu Multi-Door Courthouse, provision of pro bono legal services for indigent citizens, codification of obsolete state laws, and the introduction of real-time transcription in courts.

Mbah emphasised that these reforms were not ends in themselves but part of a broader vision to make Enugu State the preferred destination for investment, innovation, and inclusive development.
