Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Community Celebrates New Yam Festival After Over 30 Years



...... As the traditional ruler extols Governor Mbah for bringing peace back to the community.


The Traditional Ruler of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, His Royal Highness, Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, the Ubojene 2 of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom and Akajiofo Ntuegbenese, and the entire community on Friday celebrated the new yam festival, the first in over three decades in the community.


The event, which took place at Central School Ogugu, gathered the three major villages in the community, which include Ezioha, Amanabo and Ibite, as well as friends and well-wishers of the community, to commemorate the maiden Iri Ji festival of the traditional ruler.


Addressing the gathering, the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Highness, Igwe Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, said the event marks the official authorisation of farmers from the community to start uprooting and enjoying their yams from the farm.


He stated that he is overjoyed to see the revival of a cultural practice that has long been abandoned, and expressed gratitude to the people of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese for their collective support towards restoring dignity and tradition in the community.


He further noted that the festival serves not only as a cultural celebration but also as a unifying force that binds the people together, irrespective of differences.


He urged the youths of the community to embrace their heritage with pride and ensure that the values of their forefathers are preserved for generations to come.


Igwe Ogbonna also praised the state leadership of Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah for his transformational leadership and support for traditional institutions’ growth, and assured him of the total support from his community.


In his remarks, the member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, whose ancestral roots are traced to Umumbaike-Uhuahu Amanabo of the community, congratulated Igwe Ogbonna and the people of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese on the success of the maiden festival. He described it as a moment of pride and renewal for the community, which reflects their strength and cultural identity.


He urged the continuation of such events as it brings unity and stability to the community.


Hon. Atu also pledged to continue to cater for the welfare of his constituents as it remains a priority which promotes peace, unity, and sustainable development.


Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers in Awgu Local Government Area and the Traditional Ruler of Agunese Mmaku, His Royal Highness, Igwe Cyprian Nevobasi, commended the initiative of Igwe Ogbonna Jnr, describing it as a revival of culture that brings pride to the entire Awgu clan.


He maintained that cultural festivals such as the new yam should be encouraged, as they remain vital instruments for peace building, social bonding, and community development.


Igwe Nevobasi further called on government at all levels to provide more support to traditional institutions, stressing that the custodians of culture play a vital role in maintaining peace and order in society. He assured that the Council of Traditional Rulers in Awgu will continue to work in unity to foster progress in the area.


In his goodwill message, the Traditional Ruler of Mburubu Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Igwe Engr. Dr. Jerry Patrick Onuokaibe, praised the people of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese for their resilience and commitment to preserving their culture. He stated that such events have the capacity to attract development and strengthen communal relationships when properly harnessed.


Igwe Onuokaibe encouraged the youths to shun social vices and channel their energy towards productive ventures that would uplift the name of their community.


He also pledged his continued partnership with fellow traditional rulers in Enugu State to sustain the revival of cultural festivals across different communities.


Igwe Onuokaibe praised the state leadership of Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah for its sterling performance across all sectors, as well as his impact in helping the community to have its first traditional ruler in over three decades.


The event had in attendance over 32 traditional rulers, local government chairmen, captains of industry, among others.
