ENUGU: Police Move Swiftly, Suspend Mburubu New Yam Festival Over Security Threats
The Enugu State Police Command has officially stopped the proposed New Yam Festival (Iri-Ji) in Mburubu Ancient Kingdom until further notice, citing that it is capable of breaching public peace and order.
In an official communication dated 31st October 2025 and addressed to the Council of Mburubu Cabinet High Chiefs and Chijioke Obueze & Co., Legal Practitioners and Solicitors, the Command, after extensive consultations with His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, directed that the planned New Yam (Iri-Ji) by both contending parties be put on hold until further notice.
The directive, issued under reference number CB: 7000/ENS/VOL.101/5, was signed by DCP Alalade D. Adio, psc, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DFA), for the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command.
The Police Command cited the likelihood of a breach of public order arising from the festivity as the reason behind the suspension, stressing that the measure was necessary to allow security agencies and relevant authorities adequate time to resolve the issues surrounding the festival.
“After a careful perusal of your respective presentations and due consultation with His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, on the issues contained therein and the likely breach of public order, it is therefore advised that the New Yam Festival (Iri-Ji Festival) by both parties be put on hold until further notice,” the statement read in part.
The Enugu State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring peace, security, and order across the state and urged all parties in Mburubu to maintain calm and cooperate with the authorities in the interest of lasting peace.
