State Governors to Share N8,000 to Poor Nigerians to Cushion the Effect of Subsidy Removal

Image
To address the hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidy, the National Economic Council (NEC), consisting of 36 state governors and Vice President Kashim Shettima, has formulated a plan for state governments to execute cash transfer programs using state-generated social registers. The decision aims to ensure a more accurate representation of the number of vulnerable citizens in need of financial support. The NEC's move comes as the government prepares to roll out intervention measures to alleviate the effects of the subsidy removal and the unification of exchange rates. At a recent meeting chaired by the Vice President at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, a sub-committee was established to devise strategies for mitigating the economic challenges faced by the nation. Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, stated, "It is states that are better positioned to do that enumeration to ensure the integrity of th

Fuel Hike: Pro-Tinubu Protesters Storm National Assembly

Image
Protesters in support of the fuel removal on Thursday cause a bit of disruption at the National Assembly’s main entrance popularly known as Mopol gate. The protesters noted that they decided to hit the street to show solidarity with the President, Bola Tinubu, over the removal of fuel subsidy. According to the protesters, the president made the right decision by removing the ‘canker worm’ that has eaten deep into the economy. The President had during his inaugural speech on May 29, declared that there would no longer be a petroleum subsidy regime as the current 2023 budget he glimpsed does not contain it. On Tuesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited and other oil marketers raised the price of petrol from about N537/litre to between N617 and N630/litre. This development has so far raised concerns across the country. In response to the fuel hike, the convener of Stand Up Nigeria, Sunday Attah, stated that the Tinubu-led administration has done the right thing and shoul

FG insensitive to plight of Nigerians; Fuel subsidy removal with a robust intervention, is not only antisocial but also outrageously iniquitous – CUPP

Image
The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, on Wednesday , lampooned the Federal Government on what it described as “crazy and unending fuel price hikes driving inflation to the rooftops and making life increasingly unbearable for Nigerians”. CUPP, in a statement by its National Co-Spokesperson, Mr Mark Adebayo, frowned at the sudden price hike barely a month after the fuel price was increased to over 300% in May 29th this year. Adebayo said: “It has come to the attention of the CUPP the sudden and surreptitious increase yet again in the pump prices of petrol by NNPCL which has immediately started having negative domino effects on all other commodities and services in the country and further drowning most Nigerians into excruciating poverty and unprecedented economic woes. “This subsidy removal scheme is increasingly looking like a scam to cage Nigerians inside a preprogrammed regime of socioeconomic slavery dictated by leadership insensitivity. This is not about opposition Partie

Fuel Price: Anger, Frustration Spread Nationwide as NLC, NUJ, others fume

Image
Nigerians were jolted on Tuesday following a further increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, popularly known as petrol. Anger and condemnations poured in from across the country, with the citizens describing the decision as insensitive. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had in his inaugural address on May 29, 2023, announced an end to the fuel subsidy regime. Even though the subsidy regime covered the month of June, oil marketers swifty adjusted their metres to N500 and above per litre of petrol. However, less than two months after that increment, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Limited, NNPCL, has announced another increment, blaming it on market forces. It is coming at a time the citizens are still battling the effects of the May 29 increment which saw the pump price of petrol jerk up from about N197 per litre to over N500. Many Nigerians had in the aftermath of the May 29 increment parked their vehicles and resorted to commercial vehicles, which they considered e

Ban on Sit-at-home: Markets, Malls, Banks, Schools Open as Gov. Mbah Monitors Compliance …We’re tired of sitting at home, traders, residents tell Mbah

Image
It was relatively a beehive of activities as the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, toured various parts of the state capital on Monday to monitor compliance with the ban on the illegal sit-at-home declared by some non-state actors. This was even as Enugu traders and residents told the governor that they were tired of sitting at home, describing it as a plague killing their businesses and household economies. While commending the level of compliance in most places visited, Mbah, who was at the Spar Mall, Roban Stores at Bisalla Road, Market Square, Shoprite, Zenith Bank at Ogui Road, Celebrities, Ogbete Market, Garki Awkunanaw Market, Mayor Market, Abakpa Market, and the State Secretariat, among others, however warned that traders, who continue to sit at home from Monday, 24th July stood to lose their shops to serious-minded businessmen. Tinubu Warns of Potential Law and Order Breakdown as Election Tribunal Proceedings Conclude his Removal over 25% Vote in Abuja

Image
In a final written address to the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), President Bola Tinubu cautioned the tribunal members about the consequences of removing him from the presidency, suggesting that it could lead to a breakdown of law and order in Nigeria. Tinubu's lawyers, led by Wole Olanipekun, presented their defense statement, acknowledging the president's failure to secure 25 percent of the votes cast in Nigeria's capital, Abuja. However, they argued that this alone should not be enough to overturn his victory, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The legal team emphasized the potential ramifications of interpreting the relevant section of the Nigerian Constitution differently, suggesting that it would result in "absurdity, chaos, anarchy, and alteration of the very intention of the legislature." According to the Constitution, a presidential candidate must secure 25 percent of the votes in two-thirds of Nigeria's

Igbo Leaders Condemn Simon Ekpa's Actions, Call for Extradition

Image
In a strong move against Simon Ekpa, Igbo leaders have urged the Federal Government to initiate the extradition process of Mr. Ekpa, who currently resides in Finland. They accuse him of being responsible for the killings, property destruction, and disruption of markets and government facilities in the South-East while enforcing a sit-at-home order. It is worth noting that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), led by Nnamdi Kanu, had officially canceled the sit-at-home order since August 2021 and distanced itself from the weekly Monday exercise. However, despite this announcement, both the people and the government still associate IPoB with the sit-at-home order. The leadership of the secessionist group is evidently fractured, with Kanu and his followers openly declaring a battle against Ekpa to regain control of the organization. There have also been allegations that the ongoing violence in the South-East states is orchestrated by Ekpa and his group. Ekpa, who refused to take orders

The Agbaja Leaders of Thought, a group comprising indigenes of Ezeagu and Udi Local Government Areas in Enugu State, has called on the Federal Government to revive the abandoned coal mines in the state. Led by former Power and Mines Minister, Prof Chinedu Neboh, the group emphasized the urgent need to address the ecological challenges posed by the neglected coal mines. During a meeting held in Enugu on Sunday, the Chairman of Strategy and Planning for the leaders of thought, Prof. Ike Oluka, presented the group's concerns. He expressed dismay over the improper closure of underground mine tunnels, which could lead to landslides and endanger future generations. The group urged the federal government to investigate the alleged illegal sales of properties belonging to both the Nigeria Coal Corporation and the Nigeria Railway Corporation in the state. In addition to their call for reactivation of the coal mines, the Agbaja Leaders of Thought urged the state government to expedite the de
